Scaling and Root Planing - Hudson, NY

Showing signs of gum disease?

You may need scaling and root planing

If plaque and tartar is left on the teeth, it provides the right conditions for bacteria to thrive. The bacteria irritate the gums, which means that they bleed more easily. You may notice this if you are brushing your teeth, or eating, and your gums begin to bleed. This is the early stage of gum disease called gingivitis.

If you have gingivitis, your dentist or hygienist will recommend a treatment called scaling and root planing. During this treatment, they will clean your teeth by removing bacteria and then polish them to prevent bacteria from sticking again. They may also recommend an antiseptic mouthwash containing chlorhexidine, and show you how to brush and floss your teeth effectively. Most adults have some degree of gum disease but since the signs can often be subtle, many do not know it. That’s why it’s so important to receive regular cleanings so Dr. Danz can examine your smile and stop gum disease before it progresses.
